UK Graduate Visa Changes 2027 – Post-Study Stay to Drop From 2 Years to 18 Months

International students planning to stay and work in the UK after graduation will face an important visa change from January 1, 2027.

Under the new UK immigration rules, the Graduate Visa period for most eligible graduates will fall from two years to 18 months. The change applies according to the date a person submits their Graduate Visa application, not simply when they started or completed their course.

Who Will Get the 18-Month Graduate Visa?

Students who successfully complete an eligible UK bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or another qualifying course and apply for a Graduate Visa on or after January 1, 2027 will normally receive permission to stay for 18 months.

However, applicants who submit an eligible Graduate Visa application on or before December 31, 2026 can still receive the current two-year period.

What About PhD Students?

The change does not reduce the post-study period for doctoral graduates.

Students who successfully complete a PhD or another doctoral qualification will continue to receive a Graduate Visa lasting three years.

What Can You Do on a Graduate Visa?

The Graduate Visa allows eligible international graduates to remain in the UK after completing their studies. They can work in most jobs, look for employment and be self-employed.

A job offer is not required before applying for this route.

Students must apply from inside the UK while they still hold valid Student or eligible Tier 4 permission. Their university or education provider must also have informed the Home Office that they successfully completed the qualifying course.

Can the Graduate Visa Be Extended?

The Graduate Visa itself cannot be extended.

Graduates who want to remain in the UK for longer may be able to switch to another immigration route, such as the Skilled Worker visa, if they meet its requirements.

Why Is the UK Reducing the Graduate Visa?

The UK government confirmed the change as part of wider immigration reforms. It said the Graduate route should help international graduates move into graduate-level employment and contribute to the economy.

The government formally changed the Immigration Rules in 2025, setting January 1, 2027 as the date from which the shorter period will apply.

For international students planning their post-study future, the application date will now be especially important. Anyone expecting to graduate around the end of 2026 should check their course completion, Student Visa expiry and Graduate Visa eligibility carefully before making plans.
