Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced an extension in the deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026, giving eligible taxpayers more time to complete the process.
The previous deadline was September 30, 2026, but taxpayers who were required to file by that date can now submit their returns until October 15, 2026. This gives taxpayers an additional 15 days.
Why Did FBR Extend the Deadline?
According to the FBR notification, the decision was taken after receiving requests from various trade bodies and tax bar associations. The extension has been granted under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.
Business groups and tax professionals had been asking for extra time as taxpayers faced difficulties during the filing period. Reports highlighted issues including heavy traffic and technical problems with the IRIS online portal, along with delays related to return forms.

Taxpayers are encouraged to use the additional time to complete their returns correctly instead of waiting until the final day. Filing on time can help taxpayers avoid problems linked with late submission.
The extension offers relief to individuals, businesses and other eligible taxpayers who were unable to complete their Tax Year 2026 income tax returns before the original deadline.
